Hiroshi Ogawa, Governor of Fukuoka Prefecture
President of Fukuoka Prefecture "One Health" International Forum Executive Committee
Thank you very much for attending the "One Health" International Forum 2021 in Fukuoka.
This forum has been organized to share information on zoonotic infections and other One Health issues among individuals involved in each field and to send out information from Fukuoka, the gateway of Asia, to the world.
Due to the changes in the lifestyle and natural environment, the distance between humans and animals has been reduced. As a result, there is a heightened awareness of infectious epidemics that are contagious to both humans and animals, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The global spread of COVID-19 today is purported to be a zoonotic infection, and such zoonotic infections account for approximately 60% of all infections affecting humans.
In order to effectively prevent these zoonotic infections, it is important to promote actions based on the One Health philosophy that states human and animal health and the soundness of the environment are one, and such efforts have been promoted globally in recent years.
As one of such efforts, the "2nd World Veterinary Medical Association-World Medical Association Global Conference on One Health" was held in Fukuoka Prefecture in November 2016, with the adoption of the "Fukuoka Memorandum," advocating the progress from the recognition of the idea of One Health to its implementation stage.
Fukuoka Prefecture also collaborates with people in medical and veterinary fields to hold educational events and promote measures to disseminate information to help residents of Fukuoka deepen their understanding of the One Health approach.
This forum is held by webcast, and we have distinguished experts from both within and outside Japan participating in presentations, including keynote speeches from Former President Yokokura of the Japan Medical Association and President Kurauchi of the Japan Veterinary Medical Association.
It is our desire that this forum will further deepen the understanding of One Health in the minds of as many people as possible.
